The Yemeni Mona Lisa

YemeniPeoplesProject: Lama Ali

Painting by the French- Yemeni artist Lama Ali

“From young age I admired my grandmothers Sitaras. She would wrap the Sitara around her entire body and walk around the neighborhood to have tea with her friends. I found her beautiful in it. As I grew up and noticed that its a unique garment, worn by Yemeni women only, and it was part of our culture and tradition that I try to cherish and value as much as possible. Hence why I painted this painting, I want it to be remembered and perceived as the Yemeni Mona Lisa but this time the Ummi Haleema (my grandmother’s name). “
